PERTH RACECOURSE
2008 SEASON OF NATIONAL HUNT RACING
The Nelson Stand at Perth Racecourse. Opened April 2005.
PERTH
FESTIVAL - 23rd, 24th & 25th
April 2008 |
|
This is party time at Perth Races. Our season starts with a bang and this one will be even more special as 2008 is our Centenary Year! Horses have been racing at Scone Palace Park since 1908 and this season will be celebrating the last 100 years of racing at Perth Racecourse. Join us for the opening of our 2008 racing season on Wednesday 23rd April.
Its holiday time for the racing fraternity, they have had the energy sapping Cheltenham and Aintree pressure races and they come to have fun and relax in beautiful surroundings. Perhaps best of all the horses come in good numbers and with intended prize money on offer (of over £235,000 for the three day meeting), thanks to continued excellent sponsorship, the Festival Meeting is the best opportunity to see quality National Hunt horses competing in a lot of the races over the three days.
Friday 25th features The Press & Journal Highland National, with at least £25,000 on offer to the winner. Good racing by day and great parties by night that is what the Perth Festival is all about. Wednesday night will feature the now infamous Jockey’s Disco & Karaoke, to which everyone is welcome – location details to be posted here nearer the date.

OFFICE PARTY NIGHT 14th May (eve) & LADIES DAY -15th May |
|
May's evening meeting is a special night at the Races and is the first evening meeting of the summer at Perth. Book your table with some friends to enjoy the hospitality and entertainment in the smart Office Party Marquee in the centre of the course. Enjoy a meal before racing at your own table, then party into the evening to a live band with a late bar.
Tables of 10 or more are available in the Marquee to accommodate up to 350 guests for the evening’s racing and party. Prices TBA. A Three course meal, Corporate Guest Badge, Racecard, Tote betting facilities and a private bar. This is a very popular evening so book early with the Racecourse Office on 01738 551597 to avoid disappointment. (most credit cards accepted).
It's the popular Ladies Day on the 15th May, and in 2008 the competition will again be fiercely contested. Fashion and fun is the order of the day with a great prize of £500 of fashion vouchers for the “Best Dressed Lady” on the day presented by Jacques Vert and Planet. Bring your friends for an afternoon at Perth Races and enjoy the competitive racing whilst you are dressed to impress for Ladies Day.
This is always a very popular meeting with plenty of runners and some great racing. Spring is in the air, the racecourse often looks at its very best. Jockeys are hungry (they always are) it is the start of their season and there are plenty of horses on the go. It is an interesting time for the dedicated follower of NH racing as very often good young horses come to this meeting for their final run before being turned away for the summer, a time for the notebooks to be out.

SUNDAY JUNE 1st - City of Perth Gold Cup Day |
|
City of Perth Gold Cup Day, the big family day at Perth Races. From additional entertainment in the Parade Ring before racing to magicians and Pipe bands to entertain the crowds, do you need the horses? The answer is perhaps we do but you don’t. The City of Perth Gold Cup with £30,000 added is now established as one of the biggest and perhaps the most prestigious jumping race of the summer in the UK.
In 22007 the Langvale Homes sponsored Gold Cup fixture on Sunday 10th June proved one of the greatest meetings in Scone's 99-year history, attracting a record 12,000 visitors and record Tote turnover of £110,000.
David Pipe sent Tamarinbleu (12/1) on the 896-mile round trip from Somerset to lift the £30,000 Perth Gold Cup Handicap Chase in great style by 5 lengths giving the son of the legendary 15-time champion jump trainer Martin Pipe his first success at Scone Palace Park. Winning jockey, 20-year-old Cornishman Andrew Glassonbury, on his first visit to Perth, said: "Class told and he galloped on strongly for me. He's a decent horse..
Come early is the call, there is plenty of action from 11.00am onwards. The various displays and other entertainment in the Parade Ring prior to racing are excellent and proving very popular. Pipe bands will interrupt your third drink but there will be plenty of time for more and a wide range of opportunities for lunch will be on offer. Fun for all the family, a great introduction if you have not been before. Come early and don’t miss any of the additional entertainment. Children under 16 get in free for all race meetings at Perth and there will be lots for them to see and do, as well as a free crèche in the centre of the course.

| Centenary Celebration Day - 13th JULY 2008 |
|
Thisis the fourth year of this new Sunday Family fixture in the Perth Calendar, which is proving to be a very popular one, almost rivalling the crowds on Perth Gold Cup Day. It should be warm, it should be sunny and the racing will be top class. In July 2007 just over 9,000 racegoers enjoyed their day.
We will be hosting Pony Club Racing again at Perth Racecourse for only their fourth appearance in 2008. Local Pony Club members will be racing against each other in front of the Nelson Stand under The British Horse Racing Authority rules. Cheer on your favourite pony and young pilot, these could well be the jockeys of tomorrow. The winners of each race will qualify for the final at Aintree later in the year.
Our excellent watering system should have been in use and we will enjoy a magical day in the sun. The summer horses are on the go, the top jockeys are up looking to maintain their win to ride ratio and it is often worth noting raiders from the south or indeed Ireland who make the journey north.
There will also be additional family entertainment on hand to excite the crowds. Watch this space.

CENTENARY GLORIOUS FINALE MEETING - 24th & 25th September 2008 |
|
This meeting will mark the end of our 2008 Centenary Year celebrations, 100 years of National Hunt racing in Scone Palace Park, marking the milestone events over the last 100 years. Watch this space.
The Glorious Finale is our oldest fixture dating back to the 17th Century. When held down on the South Inch in Perth, Bonnie Prince Charlie is said to have been hiding in the crowd at Perth Races. In those days, the races were part of the entertainment laid on prior to the big Perth Ball, and up to quite recently that remained the case.
Gradually Perth gained more fixtures, but the September fixture has always maintained a special place in the social calendar. It provides a very useful opportunity for horses to have their first run prior to a busy season and now enjoys the blend of also providing a final run for those horses who have had a busy summer campaign. Good sponsorship provides for excellent prize money, which very often attracts a significant number of southern raiders, many of whom are worth following.
We finish on a high note and keep the fires burning until our Festival meeting comes around again in April 2009.
