Champion jockey Richard Johnson gave Irish raider Russian Regent (5-1) a masterful ride to capture the £15,000 Mackie’s-sponsored showpiece at Perth on Wednesday.
Trained in County Meath by Gordon Elliott, 12-year-old Russian Regent won in game fashion by a neck to clinch his third Scone victory for his elated owner, 81-year-old James Reilly.
“He is very tough and genuine and a pleasure to ride. I’m very pleased for Mr Reilly and his family,” said Johnson.
Inverurie trainer Jackie Stephen saddled her third Perth winner this season as Amilliontimes (11-2), owned by her husband Patrick, impressed under jockey Tony Kelly.
“He won really well and is thriving at present. It’s great to have three winners at my ‘local’ course this season,” said Stephen.
Lucinda Russell’s promising chaser Seven Devils rates the Milnathort trainer’s “best chance” at Perth on Thursday.
“He won really well at Kelso last time and he is one of my favourites in the yard,” she said.
Seven Devils faces nine rivals in the £10,000 Mackie’s-sponsored showcase at 3.40pm.
