Perth has announced the headline figures of a record-breaking 2019 season and made 2020 early bird tickets available for sale, as its groundstaff earned an industry award for “exceptional efforts”.

The Scone racecourse enjoyed a 5.6% increase in attendances year on year (from 52,445 total racegoers in 2018 to 55,396 this year), helped by a 6.1% increase in advance sales (from 30,248 in 2018 to 32,091 in 2019) as racegoers increasingly sought to secure their places early at some of the biggest meetings of the season.

For the first time in Perth’s history the course sold out two meetings in advance – Ladies Day and Summer Carnival – with Ladies Day seeing a 6.7% rise in attendance overall against 2018. Another of the track’s turbo-charged “unmissable fixtures”, Gold Cup Day, enjoyed a 6.5% crowd increase.

Off the track, new catering partner Heritage Portfolio helped Perth deliver a 9% increase in hospitality sales, as more businesses flocked to Perthshire, as well as witnessing an 8.7% increase in raceday sales throughout the venue.

Perth’s 2019 season closed last week with the two-day Glorious Finale, after which The Edinburgh Gin leading owner, trainer and jockey awards went to The County Set (seven) & Partner, Gordon Elliott and Richard Johnson.

Hazel Peplinski, Perth Racecourse Chief Executive, said: “After such an incredible season, the Perth team would like to say a massive thank you to all our loyal racegoers, trainers, owners, jockeys, members and, of course, staff of all varieties.

“We cannot wait to welcome everyone back next year for more of the same and so it’s terrific to be able to make 2020 tickets available for sale so quickly and with a discount on entry tickets for a limited time. If this season has taught us anything, it is to purchase tickets early to avoid disappointment. See you next year!”

No sooner had the dust settled on the season when Perth were informed that The Racecourse Association (RCA) had name them as one of the winners of the Racecourse Groundstaff Awards for 2019.

Sponsored by Pitchcare, Watt Fences and Fornells, the award winners were decided by an industry panel made up of representatives from the Professional Jockeys Association (PJA), British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and National Trainers Federation (NTF).

It was the Merit Award which has been given to Perth Racecourse, in recognition of the exceptional efforts to save the weather-threatened Summer Carnival fixture in August and also for the assistance given to Musselburgh Racecourse early in the season.

Hazel Peplinski added: “It’s fair to say that 2019 has been a very difficult year for our track team and I am so grateful to them for how they have addressed each and every challenge, which has been a monumental team effort of perseverance. This award is truly theirs – congratulations to the full team.”

Perth’s 2020 season begins in earnest on Wednesday, 22 April with the three-day Perth Festival – other key dates for the diary are: Ladies Day (Thursday 14 May), Gold Cup Day (Sunday 7 June), BRAW! Raceday (Saturday 20 June), Family Raceday (Sunday 12 July) and Summer Carnival (Saturday 15 August).
