Gold Cup Preview

By 3rd June 2016

Menorah, a former Cheltenham and Aintree festival winner, looks set for a starring role in Sunday’s £25,000 Pentland Land Rover-sponsored Perth Gold Cup (4.20pm) at Perth.

Trained in Somerset by Philip Hobbs and the mount of champion jockey Richard Johnson, 11-year-old Menorah faces four rivals in the 17th running of the Scone track’s flagship jumps prize.

“He’s been a fantastic horse for the yard and he’s in top form after winning at Sandown for the third year running,” said Hobbs.

“This looks a perfect opportunity for him and we are really looking forward to Sunday,” added Minehead-based Hobbs.

Rainy City will be fancied to strike for owner Sir Alex Ferguson in the curtain-raiser at 2.05pm under Sam Twiston-Davies.

Irish raider Mister First, also ridden by Richard Johnson, aims for a Perth hat-trick this season in the 2.40pm.

Inverurie trainer Jackie Stephen, with two winners at Perth this season, saddles Welcome Ben (4.55pm) and Highland Peak (5.25pm).

Perth officials expect a 10,000-strong crowd for one of the best meetings in Scotland’s racing calendar.
